INTRODUCTION

This is almost the third year since the first case of Covid-19 in Indonesia. A lot has been going on since then, especially in the field of education. The first year was the hardest when schools were closed and moved to online platforms because many have very little or no preparation to conduct online learning. In many areas, students had to walk out of their homes to attend virtual classes, download learning materials, or upload their weekly assignments because the Internet connection was not available in their areas. Many school teachers had to immediately learn tools and technologies which can help them deliver learning to their students online. The learn-from-school policy was the best alternative to face-to-face learning at schools in order to minimize the spread of the Covid-19. Until today, the challenges remain, which all elements in education need to consider.

Technology has been used in language teaching and learning for decades, however, this has just been considerably used during the emergency remote learning in Indonesia. Previously language teachers' use of technology was limited to, such as, websites to provide learning materials, presentation tools, emails, social media, and other audio visual tools that can support face-to-face learning. Therefore, in order to adapt the learning environment with online learning, more tools should be learned and integrated. The use of video teleconferencing tools such as Zoom and Google Meet, for example, was new to many. Not only should teachers train themselves to use the tools for teaching, but they also should be ready with social problems which occur along with the implementation of online learning.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology has launched a nation-wide program named “Merdeka Belajar'' in 2020 aiming at providing freedom of learning and teaching for teachers and students. This program is such a breakthrough because along with this program, simultaneous actions that target significant changes in many sectors of education are introduced. Learning the successful implementation of the program from different educational levels in different parts of the country can be a strategy to accelerate the process of introducing the program to every school and educational institution in Indonesia.

The present conference aims to reveal in a biannual scientific forum issues and trends related to language (Bahasa Indonesia and English), language teaching and learning, and the integration of technology in education, as well as those related to the implementation of Merdeka Belajar. Language teachers, students, researchers, and policy makers in the related fields are invited to share their constructive and innovative ideas in a two-day international conference, organized by the English Language Education Program, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember, Indonesia.
